Standard 4: Content Knowledge
The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline.
- Teachers’ content knowledge is crucially important to the improvement of teaching and learning. Teachers’ content knowledge makes a difference in their instructional practice and their students’ achievement. A good teacher needs to understand the subjects they teach.
Goal:
- Apply Chinese literacy, math, and science/social studies' standards into daily lesson. Update content objectives, and language objectives weekly on class website for parents to obtain.
Goal reflection:
- It's teacher's obligation to have a sufficient content knowledge in order to guide and teach students academically. Within DLI target language classroom, there is NO English allowed. I am a 2nd grade students teacher so we should assume that students' Chinese literacy proficiency is not strong enough to understand all content I am teaching. However, I still insist to have my instruction 100% in target language. This is one of our DLI mission and we believe students learn the best in this immersion environment. Parents are not allowed to speak English with me when there's a student by us. Therefore, it is kind of difficult for me and parents to face-to-face communicate. To help parents to understand what we are teaching in Chinese classroom, I build a class website and upload all content that we are learning and also what we have done in classroom. I believe this website will show my content knowledge and also help parents to stay on the same page with us.

Evidence reflection:
- For some teachers to see me updating my class website daily, it might be meaningless and useless because they feel only few parents really visit the site and get help from it and it is so time consuming. However, it is valuable when you start to do it. First, it is valuable for me personally as a teacher. This is my second year teaching and I always look back at the same week last year to see what I've done last year and how were students' reaction on the lesson or activities. It gives me a valuable feedback by looking back so that I can adjust my lesson this year to obtain a better learning outcome for students. Second, it is valuable for parents. Yes! These teachers who feel it is useless and meaningless might be right. There are not many parents visit the site and get help. But guess what?! As an educator, if there's only one student I can influence, I am doing it. I can tell there are not only few parents visit my site but there are some. There were few times I was too busy to update my site for one day or two, parents emailed me that they noticed there's no updating on my site. I love to show my content knowledge to parents to make them feel comfortable that they can give their children to me for no worries.
